Beginnings

On Sunday we do beginnings, taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. Today: It’s A Wonderful Woof, the first Chet and Bernie Christmas/holiday novel (the second being Up On The Woof Top).

The Muertos throw the best Christmas party in the whole Valley. The Valley’s where we live, me and Bernie. It goes on forever in all directions, and is almost certainly in Arizona, based on things I hear from time to time. That’s not important. Is it important that the Muertos are the roughest, toughest biker gang around? Maybe to you, but not to us. The Little Detective Agency deals with the roughest and toughest every day. Little is Bernie’s last name, I’m Chet, pure and simple, and the agency’s just the two of us. Why would we need anyone else? That’s the important part.

  1. Greetings!

I think I would like to go to one of the Christmas parties thrown by the Muertos (as long as I’m with Chet and Bernie). :^)

I love the audio book cover of “Wonderful Woof.” So festive!

    Good Sunday to all!

  2. I love how the cover art of the audio books is different than the books, not just a cropped or squished version of it but different.

I have a challenge for WTAFP.

Yes, Christmas is mentioned in several books, including it’s a Wonderful Woof, Up on the Wooftop and Santa 365.

    But what about other holidays?

How many others or even if are mentioned?

Since Thanksgiving is almost upon us how many times if ever is Thanksgiving mentioned. (I do recall an incident with a turkey but that might not be specifically Thanksgiving.)

    And what about Halloween?

    Fourth of July?

Or even something obscure like Arbor Day which was somehow morphed, been absorbed or overshadowed by Earth day? I think April is a bit late for tree planting. Not all trees but I’m planting fruit trees this year and they’ll arrive in January. (That reminds me. I’ll need to get started on holes pretty soon and one spot hasn’t been cleared yet.) If you plant bare root, April is a bit late. World Environment day is June 5, which seems to me to be a bit crowded between Mother’s day and Father’s day but a much more appropriate day for Earth day. Now August is a month without any significant holidays. Also the hottest month for many. Seems to me they should have put World Environment day and Earth day in August, especially if we are going to bring attention to climate change. But I digress.

Today is National Sardines day. Hard pass.

I made some awesome cranberry sauce last night. Anyone interested in that recipe?

  3. ML: That is quite a challenge. I will need to give it some thought. I am pretty sure that Chanukah is mentioned, but beyond that (at least in terms of immediate memory) I am drawing a blank.

Let me try a quiz of my own. Has there ever been an instance in which someone or something in any of the books has been named after a blog participant?
