Question Time

Back to Question Time, this idea I stole from British parliamentary rules. Kath Roso wants to know how authors feel about library borrowers. Speaking only for myself, I’m a big fan of libraries. And of course they buy books. I’m all for that! As an object, a book can be lent by the owner to anyone, no problem. But for me the scale of lending changes things a bit. There can be thousands and even tens of thousand of loans with no compensation to the writer. How about the streaming model, where a very small payment goes with every download? Also, is it true that something like this is already happening in other countries?

And here’s Whiskey, Chet’s October Friend of the Month, with signed reading material.

  1. I hope creative artists are fairly compensated for their work. I assume writers get a portion of book sales. But I don’t understand how musicians get paid now, since hard copies (records, CDs, etc.) are rare. I suppose if listeners use Spotify, there are either commercials or fees paid, but how can a computer capture each time I play my playlist on Apple play? Baffling to me.
