Reptilian Issues

Were caimans just another kind of gator? Were they gators at heart? She started swimming, not in a panic, but just this side of it.

(from Mrs. Plansky Goes Rogue, coming July 15 and preorders are very welcome!)

  1. Beastly hot here in Chevy Chase. It’s been in the upper 90s (with feel like in triple digits). Not great weather for a long haired golden to say the least. But we still manage to get some morning activities in, including a good game of blue ball. And wouldn’t you know it, heat notwithstanding, there is Miss Abby as well, out to keep an eye on her boy and perhaps even get a treat or two.

    1. I’m sure the grass is cool on Franklin’s feet and that is the most important thing since dogs regulate their temps with their feet. Early morning is good, the earlier the better. The loyalty and vigilance of Miss Abby must be rewarded. The Pyramus an Thisbe of the dog world.

You know, they do have those portholes you can install in your fence so that dogs can spy on the other side. Of course, you cannot pass treats through them.

  2. I heard about the heat (and humidity) over on the east side of the nation. Dogs do have a way of finding a cool spot. Diana’s favorite is laying on the north side of the house. There is a concrete walkway that is in perpetual shade and because the house is raised there are vents for the crawlspace around the entire foundation perimeter. She has discovered Caesar’s trick of laying in front of one of those vents so that the air from the crawlspace offers natural air conditioning. You’d think Freyja would do the same given her natural sleddog fluff but I guess it offers some insulation. I also suspect the summers in Alaska are as warm as it is here in San Diego, so she just does what she normally does. In fact, I have even found her sunning herself when Diana is seeking the shade. It will be a degree warmer here but the humidity is acceptable so some work will get done outside. I really need to get work done inside as I need to finish my AAA senior driver’s course before my car insurance renews so I can get a nice discount.

  3. The real pro in finding the coolest place to be was definitely Teddy. He had no shame whatsoever in laying directly on top of the air conditioning vent on the floor of our great room if he needed to cool off. And this started at a very early age. Indeed, when we went to the “meet and greet” to meet all the puppies in Teddy’s litter, when they would have been about 7 weeks old, Teddy put on quite a demonstration even then. He would go seriatim from person to person (all potential adopters) but would return repeatedly to Debbie and me (meaning that he selected us as much as we selected him), except that whenever he got warm he just sauntered off to lie on top of the air conditioning vent for a while at the breeders home. Left all of his other puppy siblings (there were nine of them) in his dust as they struggled to cool down themselves.

  4. Well, I certainly would have issues with any reptile! Aren’t they descendants of the inhabitants of Jurassic Park? Scary! Even more so than Jaws, imho. Watch out, Loretta!
I thought things were supposed to slow down in the summer. Not so far around here. I could use a nice quiet afternoon to read and sip a lemonade!

  5. Mom is hoping that Murder by the Book has the correct date on its itinerary of guests. She is hoping for a road trip to the Houston area on that day!
