Back to the Odyssey which I’m still diligently reading before seeing the movie. Yesterday – the best scene so far, where Odysseus’s dog Argos is the only Ithacan to recognize him on his return. It’s been 20 years and Athena has disguised Odysseus as a scrawny down-and-out beggar for tactical reasons we won’t go into now but Argos knows right away. All the human characters – to say nothing of the gods – seem alien to me. But not Argos! Is there a through line from Argos to Chet, the non-talking narrator of the Chet and Bernie mysteries? Let’s not push this too far!

I think rereading the Chet and Bernie series sounds way better than reading the Odyssey (mom can’t say rereading it since she has never read it)!
There is a movie premiering 09/25 called Heart of the Beast with Brad Pitt about a hero retired army dog. If you haven’t seen any of the trailers about it, you should look it up. It looks awesome.

Big Tiny: I definitely agree about rereading C&B as opposed to reading the Odyssey.

That is the most moving part of the Odyssey, IMHO. And so very “human”. Argos stays on until he can greet his master’s return and then, finally at peace, he can let go. That is loyalty.
