Pencils

Amazon reviewers can be entertaining. Here, from yesterday, on Mrs. Plansky’s Revenge. (I may refer to this at my talk this morning at 11 at the South Yarmouth Library.)

5.0 out of 5 stars “Hi, Grandma – It’s me!”

How many people have been tricked by this scam? I know it was tried on my parents, maybe about 10 years ago? The caller didn’t give his name, just said, “Grandma, it’s me. I got arrested in Florida and I need money for bail.” My mother has five grandsons — she immediately assumed it was my son Nick. πŸ˜† Anyway, he wanted her account number so he could get the money. She said he should call back when my dad was home. I’m the meantime, she called me, and Nick, and we told her it was a scam. They called back to get the account number and my dad answered this time. He said ok, do you have a pencil? They said yes. He said, well, you can take that pencil and shove it up your ass! πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜† Still my favorite story.

Anyway, Mrs Plansky was not so lucky and there went her life savings. But she decided to get on a plane to Romania and get her money back! Hilarity ensues. A really fun book.

  1. That is a great story. I think my parents got a call like that about a decade ago. They also put it off and called my sister and brother instead to find out which grandson was in jail. But I think they were in jail in Mexico or something. At least both of my parents had their faculties at the time.

I’ve been waiting for my phone call but so far nothing. Could be because I have no grandchildren.

But I do hate how the elderly are preyed upon.

There are also good people in the world. I’ve been watching a YouTube channel about a landscaper that donates his time to the elderly in his town to cut back the overgrowth in their yards and he always ends up doing home repairs. This last one the elderly lady had a leak on the roof and some guy charged her Β£1,100 pounds to fix 9 roof tile (at about one pound each) and then he didn’t even do it correctly and the roof still leaks. This guy and his Dad are not only clearing her yard for her but are also going to fix her roof for free. I try to watch things like that to remind me that only about 10% of the population are complete dirtbags and 90% are kind and nice.

    Ask me how I know.

Speaking of which today is National Clean Up day and International Coastal Cleanup day for those that wish to donate their time and energy into making their communities a nice place.

After your hard work you can eat an International Eat an Apple day apple followed by a National Pecan Cookie day cookie.

It is also National AKC Responsible Dog Ownership day, National Dog and Cat Gut Health Awareness day and Puppy Mill Awareness day.

If you happen to be in Abergavenny be sure to stop by the food festival.
