Luck

Friday 13! Unlucky for some reason. Anybody know offhand? Luck comes up from time to time in the Chet and Bernie mysteries. For those who don’t know here are the basics. Bernie’s a PI. Chet’s his canine partner. Chet narrates the stories but he’s NOT a talking dog. That opens up a lot of literary possibilities if I do say myself.

Back to luck. I’m now going to do something new, namely give a sneak peek at not the beginning but the very ending of CAT ON A HOT TIN WOOF, the next C&B. The series can be read in any order so why not preorder it so you’ll have it on pub day – April 14? (And feel free to share this post with anyone at all!)

And now, the ending (no spoiler alert necessary because it gives nothing away):

The stars shone down on us. We were lucky to have them. Were they lucky to have us? I couldn’t see why not.

  1. Greetings!

Friday the 13th is considered unlucky due to a combination of negative associations with the number 13 and the day Friday, both of which have historical roots in religious beliefs and folklore. The superstition is often linked to events like the Last Supper, where Judas, the 13th guest, betrayed Jesus, and the arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307.

Of course the stars are lucky to have Chet and Bernie…So are us readers! :^)

    Create the best day!

  2. Guys, please send positive thoughts for Biscuit (he and littermate Max had a Phriday Photo awhile back and he’s the buff kitten shown of Wose’s calendar this month.). He had extensive oral surgery yesterday and is having a little difficulty with recovery. Mom took him back today after speaking to the vet. Fingers crossed a little fluid treatment and appetite stimulant will kickstart his recovery.

  3. Healing thoughts and prayers from here in Chevy Chase too for poor Biscuit. I can report that Franklin’s occasional companion, Lorenzo, had significant oral surgery a few years ago (he lost all but four teeth) but his recovery ultimately was quite smooth, so hopefully that will portend well for Biscuit as well. Positive thoughts for Big Tiny too, as I suspect the cost associated with the surgery may have dipped into your treat budget as well.

  4. Didn’t even remember today was Friday the 13th.

But maybe the stars did align as I woke up with an art song I had to learn for a college recital in my head. Never have quite deciphered all of the meaning but it has a lot of stars in it. Anyone want to give it a go?

Samuel Barber – Sure on This Shining Night

Sure on this shining night of starmade shadows round
kindness much watch for me this side the ground.

The late year lies down the North.
All is healed. All is health
    High summer holds the earth.
    Hearts all whole.

Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder.
Wandering far alone of shadows on the stars.

  5. BigTiny reporting in. Biscuit is finally turned the corner and is feeling better today. He was in a very manic state when he got home from the vet yesterday. Constant pacing, not eating. Even Putter couldn’t calm him down. Mom thinks it was a reaction to the additional meds he got. But he finally slept and seems much better today. He has eaten and sipped his water and is acting normal.
Thank goodness! I think another trip back to the vet would put him over the edge.
WTAFP! Thank you for your concern for my treat budget. Hopefully, all will be okay but that dental stuff is very cost heavy.

  6. Big Tiny, great news that Biscuit is better! May he continue to heal and have no more scary reactions resulting from the whole experience! Sending warm snuggles!
