Soccer and Us

The soccer game from A Farewell to Arfs, the next #ChetandBernie novel (Aug. 6, preorderable) came up yesterday. Here’s a bit of Bernie (Charlie’s dad) and Malachi (Esmé’s dad) on the sidelines:

“I’ve got a small consulting company, smaller than yours.”

“Smaller than mine?”

Malachi glanced at me. “I don’t have a Chet.” He smiled. “I do have a fish named Buttercup.”

Right away I was looking forward to meeting Buttercup. That’s how I roll. Was Buttercup one of those fish that live in a bowl high up on a shelf, perhaps, although never impossibly high? Life just keeps passing around opportunities. And all you have to do is be there! Who came up with all this?

  1. Sweet. I used to have a goldfish named Mr Fish. Yes, I know, very creative. I had an aquarium at school set up to mimic the children’s picture book Memoirs of a Goldfish. I had to keep back up fish at home in case one of the fish passed away so I could bring a replacement to hide the fact. One of the school fish turned out to be quite hardy so I ended up with Mr Fish.

I would post a photo but you know, moderator purgatory.

I hope Buttercup has a nice big aquarium with rocks and live plants and some bubblers for amusement. I have some great vintage bubblers. One is a hippo and one is a T-rex. The bubbles collect in their bodies until there is enough for the mouths to float open, releasing the air, and then they shut. It’s quite amusing. I also have the traditional castle and mermaid but they don’t really fit with the hippo and dinosaur so I have the “lost city of Atlantis” instead with some buried Egyptian statues and some broken Greek columns.

BTW if taken care of properly (like an adequately sized aquarium, not a bowl) a goldfish can live to be 30 years old. Minimum size for one goldfish? 30 gallons. (They’re kinda dirty). And they do like company so bigger tank for a second goldfish. Cold water so no heater and no tropical fish. Given “the valley” and outdoor pond would not be ideal.

Speaking of Buttercup, that was our first family dog’s name. Actually Cuppy because my sister couldn’t say puppy. So I suggested Buttercup with Cuppy for short. Legally she was Buttercup on her license but never called that.

Happy International Special LIbrarian’s Day to all. It is also Make Lunch Count day and I am about to make mine. Going to look through the pantry to see if I can celebrate National Peach Cobbler day. I have no ice cream but I don’t think that is mandatory. Lastly, it is International Plant Appreciation day and I am going to be planting even more plants in my front yard (and removing some others) because I have finally, after decades of planning, planted the south planter in the front yard. After a row of rose bushes was removed 20 years ago for installing a brick pathway to the front door and around a central area and two decades of trying to remove a sucker rose bush that kept coming back (and I found another root today) I am finally putting in a cottage garden. Roses, Hydrangeas, Callas, Cannas, Gladiolus, Freesias and an Apricot tree and Grape vine. Looks like I might even get grapes this year. I will be direct seeding annuals this coming week so might get zinnias, poppies, snap dragons, salvia and whatever else I can find in my seed box. Going to use them all as soon as all of the perennials are in. I can already see blooms coming. And the peach tree on the other side of the yard is covered in red flowers with, which luck, will become peaches this year. Didn’t expect them but yay. Unfortunately the apricot only had one flower and too soon. It might be too young. Hopefully next year. My seedlings are coming along and I will be planting raised bed #1 soon. I’m filling bed #2 with dirt in anticipation of summer planting. Still building beds #3 and #4, hoping they will be ready by fall.

A small consulting company. Have to wonder what kind of consulting. could Malachi start to become a recurring character, and maybe brought in by Bernie for help on a certain case?

  2. Don’t you just love the way Chet’s brain works? Can’t wait to see what happens when and if he meets Buttercup!
ML, I know this week Sourdough Day was celebrated as our local pizza shop offered sourdough pizza at a discount. Sourdough is my new hobby. Just baked a boule today. And yes, I sorely wish we could post pix here!

    1. There’s sourdough and there’s sourdough. You can make a sourdough starter that isn’t sour. I’m interested in trying that as I don’t care for sourdough bread at all but I recognize the value of using a starter. I even have a King Arthur crock for it. And I just bought a small Pullman pan for making sandwich bread. More time consuming than using my bread machine but will be a nice change of pace.

    1. LOL. Don’t we all have a special name inflection we use on our dogs to get their attention and at the same time signal that that is NOT acceptable. And they know!
