Silver Screen

Thanks for all the actor suggestions for who could play the role of Bernie in a Chet and Bernie movie. (C&B have been in development hell a couple times, but not at the moment.) One idea, possibly scary – what do you think? – would be to bring back an AI version of, for example, 40 year old James Garner. That kind of thing will be possible if it isn’t already. We could have Elvis Presley singing songs not yet written in his lifetime and you won’t be able to tell the difference.

A quick survey of this household turned up the name Glen Powell. And the C&B mystery that deals with the movie biz is A FISTFUL OF COLLARS.

  1. I always thought if we could go back in time, the perfect actor to play Bernie would have been Brian Dennehy in his younger days. He would have been perfect.

To Rio from last night — I think I saw a display in Barnes & Noble prominently featuring Dog on It shortly after it was published, and it looked interesting enough to buy, and as they say there as well, the rest is history. One additional footnote — as most of you may know, we have a tradition here of my reading aloud at night to Debbie and whichever member of the nation within is with us at the time from a book before going to sleep. That tradition began in 2008 with Dog on It. I had bought the book and was reading it in bed, when I was laughing so hard that Debbie said what was funny. I tried to describe to her and she said just read it aloud instead, and that is what started a tradition that we have had now for nearly 18 years.

    1. Yes, a young Brian Denehy would be a good choice, but the nose still isn’t quite right.

      That is beautiful.

You don’t happen to have an available single brother or young uncle do you? One willing to relocate to Southern California?

  2. Greetings!

I was skimming FB this morning, and someone mentioned Ryan Gosling as a possible Bernie…I like it! :^)

I remember walking into my local B&N and seeing Dog On It on the New Releases table, and loving the cover picture. When I read the synopsis on the inside cover flap, I said “What a cool idea, a dog narrating the story” and while I normally do not purchase hard cover books, I bought it on the spot.

WTAFP: I love your book reading tradition!

    Good afternoon to all!

  3. WATFP, I just learned that if you read aloud for 15 minutes a day, it will forestall dementia! Too bad I never remember to do it! Uh oh,! Maybe it’s too late!
In any event, see what a wonderful tradition you have there?

  4. First!….My friend was at the busy place, she was a new employee, and she was looking for a book for her Dad….snuffle!….He had been diagnosed with lung cancer and she wanted to find something to cheer him up… wuffle!….At this time Dog On It was in paper back. Her dad loved dogs all his life. She thought this was a very unique view on how a detective story was told so she bought it online….snort!….She gave it to Dad for a Christmas present and he LOVED IT. He kept saying ” That Chet – what a dog!”….heh!…He lived long enough to read Thereby Hangs A Tail….sniffle!

PS:….Dad was the only man that Cassie The Butt Sniffing Dawg loved….snort! ….For youse that know the story of Cassie….guffle!

  5. I love James Garner, but not as Bernie. I don’t see Glen Powell either. Chet has made a point of describing in glowing terms Bernie’s nose and neither of those actors have the required nose. I’ve always felt Owen Wilson would be brilliant casting. I think he has the chops to do a great job. He needs to transition into serious drama just as Robin Williams and Steve Martin did and I think he would be brilliant at it.

I also think the idea of resurrecting the dead via AI is amusing for commercials but I am rabidly against it for TV or feature films so nix on James Garner and Elvis. I am not in favor of an AI Chet either. I’ve seen that Harrison Call of the Wild, or rather I should say I have specifically not seen it after seeing clips of the AI dog.

  6. Movie!….We here think if a movie should ever happen an unknown actor should play Bernie….snort!…One who matches the author’s description to a Tee….chuffle!….The voice of Chet would of course be the guy who reads all the audio books…snuffle!

  7. I would agree that it would not be James Garner, who is one of my all time favorite actors but just not Bernie. But if you stay in that genre (Rockford Files), there’s another actor from that time period who might fit better— Chuck Connors in Mannix ( and I’m really showing my age here).
