Beginnings

Sunday is for beginnings, where we take a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. How about The Sound and the Furry? Especially because the digital edition is on sale for the entire month of February! The price? $1.99! Nowadays that’s just another way of saying zero!

“One thing’s for sure,” the lawyer said, handing Bernie our check, “you earned every cent.”

Bernie tucked the check in – oh, no – the chest pocket of his Hawaiian shirt, just about his nicest Hawaiian shirt, with the hula dancers and the trombones, but that wasn’t the point. The point was we’d had chest pocket problems in the past, more than once. And possibly more than twice, but I wouldn’t know, since I don’t count past two. What I do know is that checks have a way of falling out of chest pockets.

“What’s he barking about?” the lawyer said.

Bernie glanced at me. “Just wants to get rolling,” he said. That wasn’t it at all: what I wanted was for Bernie to put that check in his front pants pocket where it would be safe. But then I realized that I did kind of want to get rolling. Wow! That was Bernie, knowing my own mind better than I did. And I knew his exactly the same way!

  1. We are now in our second week in Mexico, Maroma beach on the Riviera Maya, two different resorts. So excuse me if I fall behind on the blog! I still read all of your intelligent, funny, and whimsical posts as I watch the pelicans glide by.
Chet watch out for those amphibious lizards down on the Bayou!

  2. Greetings!

I have washed lots of money forgotten in the chest pocket of a shirt or a pair of jeans. The worst is when a forgotten tissue is run through the wash.

Rebecca: Hope that you are having a fun time!

    Good evening to all!

  3. Mlaiuppa. Just wanted to make sure you were okay.. I think you had said that you lived in a relatively elevated area of SD, but it sounds as though the storm hitting California is pretty devastating. BTW, Franklin wanted to know if you knew that yesterday was National Golden Retriever Day, although Franklin thinks that should be every day.

  4. I’m fine. It’s enough water to keep the ground soft for digging and spaced out enough I can get some work in between storms. No flooding. Not only am I on the mesa above the valley where the San Diego River flows but my house is on a high point amongst the surrounding streets and my house is not on a slab but raised up on pillars and a perimeter concrete block wall foundation (and strapped down for earthquakes so no falling off.)

I have no sympathy for people that buy or rent from developers that built in a flood plain during a drought. It’s Mission VALLEY and a river runs through it! Where do you think the water goes when it rains.

But hey, it’s California. Every year when it rains it’s like everyone has to learn to drive all over again. Thankfully I’m retired and I don’t have to drive in the rain if I don’t want to. I prefer not to be hit by idiots that don’t understand the physics of braking and wet pavement.

Most of the flooding is occurring in east county or north of me.

I’m in 92105 if you want to check. Not at the border but far enough south to avoid the worst of the storms. I think Northern and Central are getting the worst of it. Even the storms hitting Southern California are worse for Los Angeles which is 100 miles north of me. That’s where most of the landslides happen because they built stupid.

They promise me a deluge but I get a heavy drizzle with maybe a five minute spurt of real rain. It’s been over hyped or just very disappointing. But the dogs get to sleep in the house if it promises a heavy rain at all during the night and early morning so they are delighted. Except the house is too hot for Freyja and Diana wants to go patrol all night if she could. At least when she is in the house, once she drops off to sleep she is dead to the world until morning. Late morning as we both sleep in, not having actual jobs.

I actually did know that yesterday was Golden Retriever day and left you a belated greeting. It was also Doggy Date Night so I’m using that in my defense. February 2 was Sled Dog Day but I didn’t tell Freyja. I did take her on a personal walk through PetCo, just us two, while Diana was having a bath, er, spa day. Diana is still waiting for Big Black Dog Day. October 1.

Today is National Homemade Soup Day so stay warm everyone.

Did we all remember the thank our mail carriers? It’s their day today too.

We are enjoying Jimmy and Clarence on YouTube. King Clarence. Don’t let Franklin watch. There is also a Golden Retriever with a veritable dog mansion built under the stairs. Don’t let Franklin see that one either.
