Beginnings

Sunday is for beginnings, when we take a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. All my beginnings have one thing in common: in medias res. Here’s the start of Mrs. Plansky Goes Rogue, coming July 15 and pre-orderable anytime, like when you’re done with breakfast today. (Publishers love preorders so please pardon my hectoring.)

“What’s your favorite sports cliché?” said Kev Dinardo.
“In general?” Mrs. Plansky said. “Or possibly useful at the moment?”

[“In her second adventure, Quinn’s heroine brings the same charm, humor, and sturdy constitution that readers enjoyed from book one.” – Library Journal, starred review]

  1. Just returned from my one real guilty pleasure each year, which is attending the Malice Domestic mystery writers convention held here in the DC area each year. Indeed, going back a few years that was the opportunity that Peter had to meet Teddy RR in person (or in dogdom as the case may be). Had the opportunity to talk to a number of dog-friendly mystery writers in attendance, including Paula Munier (the Mercy Carr series with Elvis and Susie Bear); Neil Plakcy (Rochester the golden retriever), Donna Andrews (multiple dogs and other critters) and a new author I had never heard of before, CB Wilson, who has written a nine book series revolving around the town of Barkview, with different dog breed featured in each book. I actually had the chance to sit next to her at the awards banquet (at a table hosted by Neil Plakcy) and she is just delightful. She now lives in Chet-land (Phoenix) although she spends a lot of time in San Diego and will be participating as an author in the annual dog walk next weekend there (ML — are you participating again and are you looking for sponsors?) A lot of other famous authors there as well, some terrific panels (one that Hank Phillippi Ryan was on concerning the art of writing thrillers — she was terrific and a good friend of Peter’s I believe), and all-in-all a great time.

    1. The Wonder Puppies Team is active online and accepting team members and donations.
(support dot sdhumane dot org slash goto slash wonderpuppiesteam) Walk whenever your like, wherever you are with whatever companion you have.

Unfortunately we do not go to Liberty Station to walk with the masses. None of us do well in crowds (Diana would be okay but Freyja wouldn’t), plus the parking is horrendous. I can’t do the entire walk in one go, no matter how long I take or how many times I rest so we break it up into quarter and half mile stints at the dog park over weeks.

Sounds like that was a great experience and if it was local I would certainly go. Chances of that are slim, fat and none. But I was able to meet OFA at Mysterious Galaxy in La Jolla when he was here, oh, over a decade ago. Got some books personally signed.

The Mercy Carr series in the queue on my Amazon list and I will look into C.B. Wilson and Barkview. I will also look into Neil Plakcy and Donna Andrews as you are always right on top of dog mystery and detective books.

  2. I’m not sure I should be concerned over Peter’s ability to so perfectly channel the mind of a K9 school failure or a feisty senior lady.

We’ll consider it a result of superior talent and not an indication of a mental condition.
