Many thanks to Merrilee Kadwell for sending is this re Grayson, Chet’s Sept. Friend of the Month. He’ll be the FB profile pic within hours (according to IT) and Merrilee will get a signed copy of A Farewell to Arfs, the new Chet and Bernie novel. Next month this could be U! Just send in a pic. The random number generator does the rest. And happy Labor Day everybody!
“Good afternoon!! So, Grayson is a quirky little guy. My friends describe him as “Champagne and Caviar”. His favorite (and only) toy is 4.5″ black and white plush soccerball. He doesn’t play with anything else. He loves to travel and is a great road trip partner! He loves the beach but hates water. Exploring is his absolute favorite thing to do!”

My parent’s previous dog, Candy, had a obsessively favorite squeaky ball. An ugly, cheap latex thing. When it died we had a hard time finding a replacement. Then the local drug store, Longs, had them in their pet section so I bought one and she was happy again. Then Longs was bought out by CVS and their local didn’t have one. I had one by me and they had quite a few and all on sale. I bought the entire lot, must have been a dozen, just so she would have enough of them. The stash lasted longer than she did. She passed at 13 years, 9 months. Pretty good for an obese Lab mix. She had a great life.
Every once in a while we come across one of them in the house or the yard. I think I had a few for Ramses as well.
Diana is obsessed with the green Kong tennis balls and the medium Lambchop plushie. Freyja will play with whatever Diana has been playing with and then dropped. She is the little thief but also short attention span.
I suggest Merrilee go out and buy half a dozen of those plushie soccer balls Grayson is enamored of just in case they are discontinued.
Happy Labor day! While others may be having a day off from their labors, today I will be laboring. Not leaving the house. Instead I will be learning how to use my new chainsaw on the remains of the Schefflera from hall. Cutting up the stalks and then reducing the stump to a knub. Everything will eventually go into the green bin and to the city’s compost department. But the bin is currently full so it will have to go out in stages. I will also be pruning the apricot tree as for my area, it is that time of year. During the next few weeks I will be cleaning up and preparing Caesar’s Garden for transplants. I’m moving the white Calla lilies and two of the bearded Iris to that area. More to do. I have to replace the DIG irrigation timer and then put all of the garden art back. I’m considering planting some dicondra there too, now that the area will be getting more sun once the Sweet Bay Laurel is pruned back even more. Now that the front bed #1 and #2 are planted and on “automatic” more or less, I am turning my attention to the back yard and all of my new toys: pruner, reciprocating saw and now the chain saw. Good times.
As less as being Labor day it is also Nationa Blueberry Popsicle day. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one. Also World Coconut day.
For those thinking about it it is also Pierce Your Ears day. Already done, years ago but not on September 2.
For Bernie, it is Spaulding Baseball Day.
For the history geeks among us, it is Calendar Adjustment day. Quite an interesting tidbit in itself.

Greetings!
Grayson, you sound like a cool little dude.
It is a beautiful day here in this neck of the woods.
Good afternoon to all!
My nephew and his wife, from Nashville, spent Labor Day Weekend with us, much to our delight. They are now traveling home, and we miss them already. They have turned into the most amazing adults!
Little Jilly’s favorite toy is a red rubber ball, perfectly smooth, the size of a ‘Chuck It!’ ball. (But the latter don’t interest her.). She has squeaky toys, plush toys, Frizbees, a toy box full, but only red ball will do. She invents games with it, such as hide it far under furniture and get her people to search for it, roll back and forth with her people, bury it under blankets, etc. We found it on a walk, and I have never seen another one exactly like it. May we never lose it!
Grayson, you are a good boy and we delight in having your handsome countenance on the masthead this month! Keep that soccer ball safe!
It could very well be it is not a dog toy. You may need to search for red rubber balls elsewhere to discover it’s origins, then pick up some extras. Is it possible it’s a handball?
I found two high density solid rubber red dog balls on Amazon. But of course I can’t link them.
One is by Sunglow and the other is by Qesonoo. Sunglow Durable Dog Ball for Chewing & Training and Dog Balls Indestructible,Solid Rubber Bouncy for Dogs Aggressive Chewers. I would hate for Jilly to be saddened by the loss of her favorite ball.
One of the toys Candy and Ramses loved was the flying monkey. My Dad brought one home from a conference. It had elastic hands and feet and a screaming voice box when it went flying. They loved that thing. Ramses would always crunch it immediately until it stopped screaming but Candy’s lasted until the batteries died. Even silent they loved that thing and would chase it. Eventually the elastic broke and it no longer flew, was just tossed. I found a few more online in pigs, cows, etc but it was the monkey they really loved.
When our beloveds are obsessed with something that gives them such simple joy, we want to indulge them and make them happy. Thankfully the squeaky Kong tennis ball and plush Lambchop in all his iterations (Easter, Christmas, Birthday) are unlikely to be discontinued any time soon, but if they do, I will be stocking up.
ML, Thanks for your suggestions! I, too, thought it might be a handball, but never followed up and looked for one in a sports store. I did order a ball I found online, but it was not satisfactory to her majesty. I’ll let you know how the search goes. I agree. She deserves that small pleasure!
Because we hate when they are sad and must always make sure they are happy.
One of Diana’s favorites is an equine ball. Yep, a horse toy. It’s about 10 inches across, hard rubber and has a handle, I assume so horses can pick it up and carry it around and fling it. She carries that thing around like an old lady with an oversize handbag. Even when she can get her mouth on it to bite down it springs right back because it doesn’t rely on air to make it be a ball. It’s just formed that way. I have ceased trying to understand what fun they see in some things.
That flying monkey wasn’t a dog toy either.
Good day to all.
