Echo Falls

Thanks for the very nice comments yesterday re Into the Dark and the whole Echo Falls mystery series. Unlike with Chet and Bernie it should be read in order – Down the Rabbit Hole, Behind the Curtain, Into the Dark. I’ll always be grateful to the wonderful editor Laura Geringer Bass who opened the door to me writing for younger readers.

  1. I like your books for younger readers, especially the dog ones, Arthur and Queenie and Bowser and Birdie. I haven’t read this series yet but I’ll eventually get there. While I recognize that there does need to be a categorizing of books and not all books are suitable for younger readers, I think sometimes people get hung up on the labels. I once sent a really good tween or younger adult book to my nephew and my brother told me he was reading at the high school level so they donated the book. Never even bothered to read it.

It was The Good Dog by Avi.

I would have sent him a lot of Gary Paulsen as well but if they were going to be snobby about it, I didn’t bother.

A good book is a good book.

I read books. I read adult books like Ben Hur and The Name of the Rose.

I read books for younger adults like the Hunger Games series.

I even read picture books. Patricia Polacco is one of my favorite children’s book authors. I came across Fancy on sale at a store once and bought it on a whim. I’ve been buying her books ever since. I am still buying Alexander Steffensmeier only now I have to order them from Amazon DE and use google translate. Lucky for me there isn’t as much text as The Name of the Rose.

A book is a book and a story is a story. You can use a lot of SAT college level words to tell your story or you can do it with few or no words at all, like my beloved Good Dog, Carl books by Alexandra Day. Or the Hat books by Jon Klassen. Using less words is a lot more difficult.

A story is a story. A book is a book. I don’t rate books on whether they have illustrations or not or how many pages they have.

And when I find a good author, I will seek out their other books. If the second is as good, I’ll start buying them all. If it’s a dud I might not.

I loved The Art of Racing in the Rain and I did buy Raven Stole the Moon but have yet to read it because the story just didn’t interest me. He has a few more, also with stories that don’t interest me.

I loved Cinnamon and Gunpowder but haven’t bought Oddity because the story just doesn’t appeal to me. There are only those two.

I don’t care much for fantasy or magic so never read Harry Potter. I did see the movies but no, didn’t read those books or the Twilight series. But being Peter Abrahams books I will eventually get to Echo Falls. I hope I am forgiven for buying used paperbacks as these may not be keepers. The keepers I buy in hardcover. All of my Chet and Bernie are full price hardcover as soon as they are released. Yes, my penny helped to buy that new bicycle.
