Baseball

Vaseball was the subject of yesterday’s post. It comes up a lot in my work, including in the Chet and Bernie mystery series. Here’s the first mention of baseball in the series, from the first book, Dog On It:

“He mentioned you’d gone to West Point.”
“Uh-huh.”
“That’s quite an accomplishment, just getting accepted.”
Bernie was quiet. We watched the door – I could see the number, two little metal pieces, but I’d have to take Bernie’s word that it was 37.
“How does baseball fit in? Lieutenant Stine said something about that.”
“I played a little ball. They were short on pitching that year. Otherwise they’d never have taken me.”
“You pitched for Army?”
Another nod, this one not so happy.
“I love baseball. Were you a power pitcher or the finesse type?”
“Power, if you want to call it that, until I blew my arm out. That’s when I learned that finesse wasn’t my … “

    I played one year of Bobbysox softball. The experience was so bad I don’t watch much baseball.

    Today is National Apple Strudel day and National Eat Your Vegetables day.

    I would not recommend a Broccoli Strudel.

    Today is going to be a scorcher, 81 between noon and three with a “real feel” of 87, but the humidity is only 58% which isn’t that bad if you stay in the shade, which I will be doing until after peak heat.

  2. One of our favorite duty stations, back before Huny Punkin retired, was the United States Military Academy at West Point. HP was a Public Affairs Officer. It truly is the Camelot of the Army. Especially if you are not a cadet!
