Phriday But No Photos

Instead we’ll have a tedious rumination on writing. There’s how the character sees things unfolding and then there’s how the reader sees them. This tension works somewhat differently depending on the POV – first person or third – and you can see that by comparing the Chet and Bernie novels with Mrs. Plansky, and it can be funny or tragic or anything in between. The technique shows up in other art forms. Take Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, where Butterfly sings the famous aria Un Bel Di Vedremo, all about how Pinkerton will finally sail back to her and she’ll see the ship on the horizon, and him just a speck on the road and finally they’ll be together and he’ll call her his orange blossom. She has all the details down so clearly. But the strings and the horns are saying something else.

(Lots of great performances of this aria on YouTube – Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, even Rosa Ponselle. Victoria de los Angeles is my favorite. To spare yourself another post like this next Friday just send a photo or two and blurb about practically anything to peter.b.abrahams@gmail.com.)

  1. Thank you for encouraging blog fans to contribute their doggie stories!
However, I find your musings on points of view quite interesting! It’s the technical side if writing of which I am completely ignorant that I find so strangely compelling!

  2. I’m on it. The San Diego Humane Society has their Walk for the Animals on May 2 and Team Wonder Puppies is already registered. There is also the AKC Spring Scurry and Turkey Trot fitness 3 km so I’m doing something on dog activities and will include info on the National Association of Canine Scent Work and the AKC Nosework since Diana has participated in all of them. I even have photos of Diana doing a NACSW trial. I’ll try to add some info on Treiball, although neither dogs have participated in that. It’s mostly for herding dogs. I did try Freyja on lure coursing as I figured being half husky she would love to run and she is a little predator so would chase the lure but she failed miserably. She chased for a while but as soon as it was a distance from me she would stop and either come back or get distracted sniffing the ground. Diana hasn’t done any nosework since before Covid but I’m hoping that if I practice with her in the front yard and Freyja watches, she will copy her and pick it up. But there is that short attention span thing with her so not sure any sport is her cup of tea.
